A well-designed inner block should offer residents a space for cultural, sports and social activities.

We designed a six-storey residential city block for the residents of Mladá Boleslav, which offers them the opportunity to actively meet and share public space. At the same time, it provides them with sufficient privacy within private front gardens. The Individual buildings are connected by passageways that create new pedestrian infrastructure, and similarly to the Viennese apartment blocks, the inner block becomes the centre of action.

We have divided its area into three parts: private, semi-private and public.

Cut hedges serve as the dividers between the individual front gardens, which at the same time separate them from common areas and pedestrian routes. In addition, thanks to the varied height arrangement, they are also visually limited. Behind the hedge begins semi-private space for the residents of the block. We thought of the neighbours who will use the space intensively so included children's features, such as an outdoor gym and pergola with seating. We have also added a small water feature to this area. For quiet recreation, we created a zone with a grassy area with a grid of trees, perennial beds and a second pergola, in which there will be a shared barbecue.

The semi-private area is fenced, and behind the fence begins the public space. There is a Piazzetta with seating in the northeastern part of the courtyard, and along the eastern edge of the building, there will be a new road with a line of trees that will connect the area with the local school. The residential block thus becomes a living green space that allows daily operations and rich community activities. It is barrier-free and welcoming to family and neighbourhood life.

It was important for us that the solution reflect the existing composition of the city. We therefore supplemented the block with a dominant height which follows on from the existing similar elements along an important communication axis. We also worked with another typical motif in this area - the commercial ground floor - and placed commercial units on the ground floor of the block along Jičínská Street. The shops and the high-rise landmark simultaneously enliven and complete the square created during the recent development between Jičínská and Laurinova streets.
